Bengaluru The Indian government has passed an aid package worth 890 billion rupees (around ten billion euros) for the state telecom group BSNL. This is intended to support the company, which has been making losses for twelve years, in the introduction of 4G and 5G services in a market dominated by private providers.

“With this revitalization package, BSNL will become a stable telecom operator focused on delivering its services to the most remote parts of India,” the government said on Wednesday.

A few days ago, BSNL announced an alliance with the software group Tata Consultancy Services. Among other things, this is intended to support the construction of a 4G network throughout India. The private competition relies on the more modern 5G network.

The BSNL faces a sharp price war with private providers. The main contributor to this was the provider Joi, which had pushed ahead in 2016 with the offer of free calls and inexpensive data plans.
