India SUV Market: Toyota, Honda and Hyundai Plan New Hybrid and Electric Models

India’s automotive market is bracing for a wave of hybrid and electrified SUVs as major manufacturers including Honda, Toyota, and Hyundai prepare new releases, bringing refreshed models and new powertrain options to buyers.

Toyota and Honda Prepare Midlife Updates and Hybrid Focus

The upcoming product wave places heavy emphasis on hybrid technology, a strategy expected to reshape domestic sales. Toyota is preparing a midlife update for the Hyryder, an SUV originally developed through its partnership with Suzuki in India.

Mechanical specifications for the updated Hyryder are expected to remain steady. The current 1.5-liter mild hybrid petrol engine and 1.5-liter strong hybrid petrol engine will likely continue powering the lineup, keeping fuel efficiency at the forefront of the refreshed model’s appeal.

Interior Enhancements and Advanced Safety Features

While the mechanical platform sees continuity, cabin technology and exterior styling are slated for upgrades. The new Hyryder facelift will feature minor exterior design changes alongside a more feature-rich interior environment.

Reports indicate that Level 2 ADAS, ventilated seats, and a larger touchscreen infotainment system are slated to join the equipment list. Buyers can also expect new exterior paint options and revised interior color themes.

Kia Expansion Targets B and C Segments

Meanwhile, Kia India is developing two new utility vehicles targeted for the 2028-29 period, with expected pricing spanning across specified ranges.

The first model is a B-segment midsize SUV measuring approximately 4.2 meters in length, positioned below the Seltos. This vehicle will offer petrol, diesel, and hybrid powertrain configurations, competing directly against rivals in the segment.

Seven-Seater C-Segment Aspirations

The second vehicle under consideration by Kia is a premium C-segment seven-seater SUV positioned above the Seltos. While awaiting formal corporate approval, the model is planned to utilize petrol, diesel, and hybrid variants.

If greenlit, the seven-seater would contend directly with established market entries. The vehicle targets competitors including the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari, and MG Hector Plus, while a potential future arrival of the Sorento could extend the brand’s premium reach.
