Kabul: The Taliban has once again praised India. It has also thanked India for the Afghan cricket team and other kinds of humanitarian aid. Suhail Shaheen, head of the Taliban’s Doha-based political office, cited historical relations with India. He also called for a renewed cooperation from India. He said that India should complete the unfinished projects in Afghanistan and help in the health care of the Afghan population. He assured to do more work on women’s rights and said that the situation is not as it is being shown. Shaheen claimed that thousands of women are working in various fields including health care, education and law enforcement in Afghanistan.

Said thank you for helping the Afghans

In an interview with India Today, Suhail Shaheen said, India has been helping the Afghan cricket team for a long time. Apart from this, thousands of Afghans are doing good business in India even today. Underlining the role of women in Afghanistan’s economy, he said that more than 10,000 business licenses have been issued to women entrepreneurs. He said that this is a significant increase compared to the previous government. However, he admitted that the ongoing international sanctions have hampered the full potential of Afghanistan’s economy. He stressed, “If we were not subject to economic sanctions, there would have been more progress.”

How India helped Afghanistan

India has played an important role in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Afghanistan. India has made significant investments in the field of technical cooperation and capacity building in Afghanistan. So far, India has provided assistance of $3 billion to Afghanistan. However, India’s assistance has decreased since the Taliban took over. Despite this, India has supplied many essential items including grains, medicines, COVID vaccine to Afghanistan as humanitarian aid. India has helped in the construction of the Delaram-Zaranj highway to connect Delaram district in Afghanistan to the Iranian border. With the help of this highway, the Taliban transported trucks loaded with minerals to Chabahar port in Iran a few days ago.

India has built the Salma Dam in Afghanistan, which is also known as the Afghan-India Friendship Dam. Apart from this, India has played an important role in the construction of the new Parliament building in Afghanistan. India also established the National Agricultural Science and Technology University in Kandahar in 2014. Apart from this, India has also built more than 2,500 miles of roads in Afghanistan. India has built more than 200 public and private schools in Afghanistan. India has also given scholarships to a large number of Afghan students every year.
