India Defeats Afghanistan by 6 Wickets in First T20I
India emerged victorious in the first match of the 3-match T20I series against Afghanistan, winning by 6 wickets. The match, which took place in Mohali, saw India captain Rohit Sharma winning the toss and electing to bowl in the midst of bitter cold.
Before the match, Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid had announced Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal as the openers for India. However, Jaiswal had to withdraw from the match due to a right groin injury.
The Afghan team got off to a good start with openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and skipper Ibrahim Sadran adding 50 runs in 8 overs. However, Gurbaz was dismissed for 23 runs, and Sadran followed suit with 25 runs. Mohammad Nabi’s aggressive batting helped the team reach a total of 158 runs at the end of 20 overs, with Mukesh Kumar and Axar Patel taking 2 wickets each for India.
Chasing a target of 159 runs, India faced an early setback with captain Rohit Sharma getting run out in the first over. However, Shivam Dube’s unbeaten 60 off 40 balls guided the team to victory in just 17.3 overs. Along with Dube, Jitesh Sharma and Ringu Singh contributed 31 and 16 runs respectively.
For his exceptional performance, Shivam Dube was awarded the man of the match, scoring 60 runs and taking 2 wickets for just 9 runs in 2 overs.
With this win, India takes a 1-0 lead in the 3-match T20I series. This victory also marks a milestone for Rohit Sharma, who became the oldest captain to lead a team in T20 internationals and the oldest captain to win a T20 international at the age of 36 years and 256 days.
