Through a study, it has been revealed that the great wealth that can generate foreign exchange for our country through wind power generation is found in the sea area around Mannar Poonagari.
A recent study by the Indian Ministry of Electricity revealed that 30,000 MW could be generated from Sri Lanka’s offshore waters and another 30,000 MW from the bordering Indian waters.
At present Sri Lanka’s daily power generation capacity is around 4300 MW.
Big dollar income
Shallow-sea wind farms in the region could generate seven times more energy and sell the surplus internationally to generate huge dollar revenues, the study said.
Apart from the study report, it is said that the country has already prepared the basic works for setting up wind power plants in the Indian region.
Adani, one of India’s leading energy producers, has also conducted research in the region by several leading companies for their upcoming wind power projects.
Project by Adani Group
Adani has already started a 500 MW wind power project in Poonagri area of Jaffna.
Indian reports show that the amount they invest to generate one megawatt of electricity is one million dollars.
Apart from India, Japan is also planning to scrutinize the report and come up with suitable investment plans in the future, according to informed sources.
