Scientific Talent Search Award: An Indian-origin student from Michigan has won the most prestigious science talent search award given to high school students in the United States. Neil Mudkal (17) will be awarded $2.50 lakh for creating a computer model in the 2023 ‘Regeneron Science Talent Search’ competition. The competition is the oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school students in the United States.

Mudkal has developed a computer capable of quickly and accurately predicting the structure of ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecules. He said his computer model could simplify the process of diagnosing and treating certain diseases. According to one report, Mudgal’s computer model contains a ‘library’. It sheds light on the possible shape of an RNA molecule based on its molecular structure.
Prize money awarded to 40 winners
American journalist Soledad O’Brien covered the event live, the statement said. A total of $1.8 million in prize money was awarded to 40 winners, including Mudgal, at the ceremony.

Winners were selected based on the scientific rigor of their work, exceptional problem-solving skills and motivation to be leaders in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields.
Emily Ocasio (18) from Virginia was second and Ellen Shu (17) from California was third. Ocasio and Shue were awarded prize money of $1.75 lakh and $1.50 lakh respectively.
Maya Ajmera, President of the Society for Science and Executive Publisher of Science News, said, “Congratulations to the winners of the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2023. These young scientists will shape our future. I am sure of his creativity and perseverance.”
