Indian athlete Vinesh Phogat was disqualified before the final of the Olympic freestyle wrestling tournament, Day.Az reports with reference to the official release of the Olympic organizing committee.
During the weigh-in, it was discovered that the athlete weighed more than the 50 kg allowed for her category. In the final, Phogat was supposed to compete for the gold medal with American Sarah Hildebrandt, but due to the disqualification, she will not receive any medal.
The Indian athlete’s weight increased slightly as she recovered from her first three bouts. She managed to lose 2 kg overnight. However, this was not enough: at the weigh-in, she was found to be 100 grams overweight.
The night before the weigh-in, the athlete did not sleep. She ran, jumped and cycled in an attempt to lose weight. In the morning, she felt dizzy due to dehydration. She was hospitalized in the medical center in the Olympic Village.
