Saida Lulu Minhaj Saidi, originally from Hyderabad, Telangana, traveled to the United States in August 2021 to pursue a Master’s degree in Higher Education at Trine University in Detroit, Michigan.
Alarming concerns arose when Saida failed to maintain contact with her family in Hyderabad for the past two months. Two youths from Hyderabad then informed Saida’s mother that she was battling severe depression, having been spotted wandering the streets of Chicago without access to food following the theft of her belongings.
Taking prompt action, Kaligur Rahman, a prominent leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (the ruling party in Telangana), shared the distressing news on his social media platforms. Consequently, Indian embassy officials in Chicago collaborated with local police and NGO workers to gather information regarding Saida’s whereabouts and well-being.
Furthermore, Mukharam, an Indian social worker residing in Chicago, managed to establish contact with Saida. Kalikur Rahman subsequently updated his social media, revealing that Saida had been admitted to a hospital where she is currently undergoing treatment.
Sources suggest that Saida’s mental state has been severely impacted by the economic crisis, which had hindered her job prospects in the United States. It is believed that she can only be repatriated to India after recuperating from her current stressors.
In light of this distressing situation, a Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader has appealed to India’s External Affairs Minister, Jaishankar, requesting the necessary arrangements be made to enable Saida’s mother to travel to America and provide her with much-needed support during this challenging time.
