Indian Navy Commandos Free Hijacked Cargo Ship off Coast of Somalia

New Delhi: Indian Navy commandos have successfully freed a cargo ship that was hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia. The vessel, which has 15 Indian crew members on board, was rescued in an operation conducted by the elite ‘Marcos’ commandos of the Indian Navy.

The rescue operation began when the warship INS Chennai approached the hijacked ship in the Arabian Sea. Commandos boarded the vessel from a helicopter, and the Indian Army had warned the pirates to abandon the ship. Fortunately, all Indian crew members on board are reported to be safe.

The Liberian-flagged vessel, named ‘MV Lila Norfolk’, was carrying 15 Indian nationals when it was hijacked. The Indian Navy immediately initiated a search for the hijacked ship, deploying navy aircraft to establish contact with the sailors on board.

The successful rescue operation highlights the Indian Navy’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Indian nationals at sea and the effectiveness of its elite commando forces in tackling piracy. The navy will continue to maintain a strong presence in the region to deter future attacks and protect international shipping lanes.
