Commandos paradropped 1400 km away from India
The kind of bravery shown by the Indian Navy during the rescue of MV Rouen is rarely seen. For this operation, the Marcos Commando team of the Indian Navy was paradropped through the C-17 Globemaster aircraft of the Air Force. This aircraft had paradropped these marine commandos 1400 km away from the Indian coast. This was the first footage of a deep sea commando landing on camera in the entire world. Indian Marcos commandos conducted an anti-piracy operation in the open sea, after which the ship named MV Ruen was freed. There were also 7 Bulgarian citizens on board this ship, who were captive for the last three months.
INS Kolkata started the campaign
The operation was initiated by the Indian Navy’s stealth-guided missile destroyer INS Kolkata. She had intercepted MV Rouen during patrol. It was later revealed that the ship was hijacked by Somali pirates on 13 December 2023. When the Indian helicopter approached to warn the pirates aboard the ship, they started firing. About 35 Somali pirates with weapons were aboard different parts of the ship. After this the Indian Navy started high-voltage anti-piracy operations.
How did the Indian Navy conduct the operation?
Indian Navy’s INS Subhadra patrol ship, maritime patrol aircraft P-8I and a high-flying drone also participated in this operation. Apart from this, while C-17 of the Indian Air Force flew from India with the elite Marine Commandos (MARCOS) of the Indian Navy. It flew for 10 hours and dropped trained Marcos commandos of the Indian Navy into the sea using two combat rubberized raiding craft boats. Paradropping in the open sea is always difficult because during this time it is difficult to judge the blue and bright surface of the sea and the wind flow.
35 pirates surrendered
Despite this, Marcos commandos of the Indian Navy paradropped from C-17. They have received training to enter the sea in this manner. But, this was the first time that he paradropped at such a distance from the Indian coastline. Marine commandos boarded the bulk carrier MV Rouen and successfully disarmed 35 pirates aboard the ship. Marcos successfully rescued the 17 crew members on board. This operation greatly enhanced the Indian Navy’s influence from the Gulf of Aden in the west to the Straits of Malacca in the east. The operation also highlighted the growing cohesiveness of the Indian Armed Forces in addition to the capability of the Indian Navy to conduct joint operations.
