New Delhi: Indian cricketer Barinder Sran has retired from cricket at the age of 31. This left-arm fast bowler has announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket. Sran played 6 ODIs and 2 T20 matches for India between January 2016 and June 2016, but since then he was out of the team. Sran was not getting a chance in IPL as well. Now he has decided to quit cricket.

Barinder wrote in an Instagram post, ‘Now that I am officially retiring from cricket, I look back at my journey with gratitude. After moving from boxing to cricket in 2009, the sport has given me countless and incredible experiences. Fast bowling soon became my forte and opened up avenues to represent the prestigious IPL franchise, which resulted in the highest honour of representing India in 2016. Even though my international career was short, I will cherish its memories forever. I will always be grateful to God for giving me the right coach and management who supported me throughout my journey.’

Barinder Sran, the son of a farmer, started playing cricket after seeing an advertisement of Kings XI Punjab, which called for youngsters to participate in trials. Prior to this, he was training as a boxer at Bhiwani Boxing Club in Haryana. He did not get an IPL contract, but a boy who had till then played only village cricket with a tennis ball, reached the King’s Cup and became one of the top 35-40 uncapped cricketers from Punjab. Eventually, he was picked by Rajasthan Royals in the 2015 IPL auction. The biggest moment of Sran’s cricketing journey came a year later when he was selected in the Indian ODI squad for the tour of Australia. Till then, he had only eight List A matches to his name. He made his ODI debut on January 12 in Perth under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, taking 3 wickets for 56 runs.

He took four wickets in his debut T20

Barinder Sran was also selected in the squad for the white-ball tour of Zimbabwe in June 2016, where he made his T20 debut. He performed Man of the Match by taking 4 wickets for 10 runs in the second game in Harare. This is the best performance by any Indian bowler in debut T20. Overall, Sran played 18 first-class, 31 List-A and 48 T20 matches between 2011 and 2021. In the IPL, he represented the Royals, Kings XI, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians. Sran last played for Punjab against Madhya Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in February 2021.

Barinder Sran played for Mumbai Indians, Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and took 18 wickets in 24 matches between 2015 and 2019. He played his last competitive match for Punjab against Madhya Pradesh in the 2020-21 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Apart from taking 47 wickets in 18 first-class matches, he took 45 wickets in 31 List A matches. He has 45 wickets in 48 T20 matches.
