Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condemned a viral video showing two women being forced to walk naked by a group of men in the northeastern state of Manipur. The video, which has sparked nationwide outrage, depicts an incident from May 4 and shows the victims being groped and sexually assaulted while surrounded by a violent mob. Four people have been arrested so far, and police raids are ongoing. Modi addressed the situation for the first time on Thursday, saying that the incident is “shameful for any civil society” and that the law will take its course. Opposition parties have criticized Modi’s handling of the issue, with the Congress party accusing him of turning democracy into “mobocracy.” The Indian government has also issued an order to social media platforms, instructing them not to share the video.
