HAMILTON: India lost the second match of the Women’s ODI World Cup. Hosts New Zealand beat India by 62 runs. After losing the toss and opting to bat first, New Zealand were bowled out for 198 in 46.4 overs.

Harmanpreet Kaur was the only Indian batsman to score 71 off 63 balls with two sixes and six fours. But there was no one to support. Batting on 261, India lost opener Smriti Mandana (6) just before the score reached 10. Soon after, Deepti Sharma (5) also returned. Yasthika Bhatia, who scored 28 off 59 balls, including two fours, was next in line. The slow pace of Yastika and Captain Mithali Raj was a setback for India.

Mithali and Harman Preeth put on 47 for the fourth wicket, the highest in the Indian innings. Mithali Raj was dismissed for 31 off 56 balls, including a four. Richa Ghosh (0) also disappointed. Sneha Rana (18), Pooja Vastrakar (6), Julan Goswami (15) and Rajeshwari Gaekwad (0) are the other outfielders.

Earlier, the Kiwis scored 260 for nine in 50 overs. Amy Satterthwaite (75) and Amelia Keru (50) scored half-centuries for the Kiwis. The duo added 67 runs for the third wicket. Katie Martin (41), captain Sophie Devin (35) and Maddie Green (27) also put in better performances for the Kiwis. Pooja Vastrakar took four wickets for India. Rajeshwari Gaekwad took two wickets.

India had beaten Pakistan in the first match. India’s next match is against West Indies tomorrow. India’s Julan Goswami holds the record for most wickets in a women’s ODI World Cup. Julan made history by taking a wicket against the Kiwis yesterday. Australia’s Lynn Fulston holds the record for most wickets with 39. Julan has been playing in the World Cup since 2005.
