Riley Hospital Nurse’s 260-Pound Transformation Inspires Colleagues and Fuels Bodybuilding Dreams

A remarkable weight loss journey is captivating colleagues and inspiring a community. Kevin Goode, a registered nurse at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, has undergone a dramatic transformation, losing 260 pounds and reclaiming his health after a life-altering wake-up call.

From Urgent Warning to Unstoppable Momentum

The catalyst for change came with a stark warning from Goode’s physician. “He told me that I wasn’t going to make it to 40 if I didn’t make some sort of change, and that kind of kicked it into gear,” Goode recounted. At 28 years old and weighing 465 pounds in February 2023, Goode was battling hypertension, sleep apnea, and Type 2 diabetes. He opted for bariatric surgery later that year, initially aiming to lose 20 pounds pre-operatively – he ultimately shed 80.

With the unwavering support of his mother, coworkers at Riley, and his gym in Martinsville, Goode began to experience tangible progress. He quickly discovered that weight loss wasn’t just about numbers on a scale; it was about a profound improvement in his quality of life.

“I take the stairs every day to get up to work here, and I’m not winded by the end of it,” Goode explained. “In fact, sometimes if I skip cardio in the morning, I will literally walk the stairs up and down three times just to make sure I get my cardio in.”

A New Level of Care

As of July 2025, Goode’s weight had stabilized at 205 pounds. His previous health conditions have vanished, and he reports feeling healthier and more energetic than ever before. This transformation extends beyond personal well-being; it has enhanced his ability to care for his young patients. “While I was always able to care for patients at Riley, I explained now I can do more for them and better interact with kids,” Goode said.

The impact of Goode’s dedication extends beyond his personal life. Shelby Nation, day shift coordinator at the hospital’s heart center, noted the ripple effect of his journey. “Whether it’s participating with him or just sending him an encouraging text or just telling him here on the unit, ‘Kevin, you look great. You’re doing so well, just we’re really proud of you.’ Just any kind of motivation that we can give him,” Nation said.

From Patient Care to the Stage

Goode’s commitment to health and fitness has taken an unexpected turn: he will compete in a transformational bodybuilding competition in October. Encouraged by a trainer at his gym, the competition judges participants on before-and-after photos, their personal story, and 20% on their current physique.

“I’ve already won, obviously, with shedding the weight off and changing my life and my lifestyle and everything I’m able to do now,” Goode stated. “But just trying to put it in that next person’s mind that you can literally do whatever you set your mind to.”

Goode is currently pursuing his certified trainer license and will graduate in May as a nurse practitioner. His ultimate goal is to leverage his experience to inspire others, demonstrating that even the most daunting challenges can be overcome with dedication and support. He hopes to show others that confidence and a fulfilling life are attainable, regardless of where they start.
