Colts Reportedly Open to Trading All-Pro Running Back Jonathan Taylor
In a surprising turn of events, the Indianapolis Colts have reportedly changed their stance on running back Jonathan Taylor’s trade request. Initially denying the request, the team is now said to be allowing Taylor to seek a trade, indicating that his days with the franchise may be numbered.
According to sources, there have already been suitors expressing interest in acquiring Taylor. However, the Colts are seeking a first-round pick in exchange for the All-Pro running back. This hefty price tag may deter potential trade partners, especially considering that any team acquiring Taylor would also need to negotiate a contract extension as he enters the final year of his rookie deal.
As the trade talks progress, the Colts must start considering their options for the future of their backfield. With rookie head coach Shane Steichen and rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson leading the team, a new era is about to begin in Indianapolis.
One possible approach for the Colts is to rely on their existing running backs and tailored designed runs for Richardson. Currently, the team has Deon Jackson, Zack Moss, Evan Hull, Kenyan Drake, Jake Funk, and Jason Huntley as alternatives to Taylor. Moss, acquired from the Buffalo Bills last season, showed promise towards the end of the year and could be a key contributor.
Drake, a veteran presence in the backfield, could provide stability for the rookie quarterback. Meanwhile, rookie Evan Hull may be utilized as a pass-catching option for the Colts due to his college experience. Although not an ideal scenario, this “Island of Misfit backs” plan could be a feasible option for the Colts.
Another route the Colts might consider is signing free agents to bolster their backfield. Kareem Hunt and Leonard Fournette appear to be the top candidates for this approach. Both players bring versatility as runners and pass-catchers, which would greatly benefit the Colts’ offense.
Hunt, who previously visited the Colts during the offseason, has experience as a secondary option in Cleveland’s backfield and would be an attractive addition. Fournette, despite a decline in his rushing average last season, proved his worth as a receiver and has a track record of success.
However, the Colts could also explore the possibility of acquiring a running back in a trade involving Taylor. The Miami Dolphins, one of the teams rumored to be interested in Taylor, have running backs Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. who could be potential trade assets. Additionally, rookie De’Von Achane could be a valuable long-term investment that aligns with the Colts’ rebuilding phase.
