New Delhi: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that India’s policies on electric vehicle production will not be changed for US-based electric vehicle maker Tesla.

India has emerged as the largest auto market after USA and China.

Due to this, various foreign automobile manufacturing companies are constantly focusing on India. The Tesla company owned by the famous entrepreneur Elon Musk from America is leading in the production of electric vehicles which are considered to be a revolution in the automotive industry. The company is interested in selling its electric cars in India.

But Tesla sees India’s 100 percent maximum tax on imported cars as its biggest hurdle. Tesla is considering lowering this tax.

Also, the company seems to be expecting some regulatory relaxations to set up its largest plant in India. Thus, Tesla’s India footprint remains a big question mark.

A major issue is that if concessions are given to foreign electric vehicles, Indian companies such as Tata and Mahindra will be affected.

Meanwhile, Minister Piyush Goyal, who gave an interview to PTI news agency on Sunday, said:

The government is keen to ensure that the electric vehicle sector in India does well. Increase in use of electric vehicles will reduce crude oil imports. Environmental damage caused by vehicles will be avoided.

At the same time India’s electric vehicle manufacturing policy will not be changed for any individual company (Tesla) in importing and manufacturing electric vehicles. All companies have the right to make demands to the government. However, the government is not obliged to accept it as it is.

At the same time, the government wants all the electric vehicle manufacturers in the world to do their sales in India.

He said that negotiations are going on between various ministries in order to attract more investment from Europe, America, Japan, Korea and other countries in this sector.

Last November, Minister Goyal visited Tesla during his US visit. Elon Musk met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York in June last year. Then the launch of Tesla cars in India was discussed.
