India’s neutral stance on Russia-Ukraine is neither satisfactory nor surprising: US
Washington: The United States has said India’s neutral stance on Russia and Ukraine is unsatisfactory, but not surprising given its historic relationship with Russia.
Mira Rap Hooper, Indo-Pacific director of the White House National Security Council, made the remarks at an online forum hosted by the School of Advanced International Studies in Washington.
She said India needed alternatives to maintain close ties with Russia.
‘At least in the UN, I think everyone will agree that India’s position on the current crisis is unsatisfactory. But that is not surprising, “said Hopper.
India abstained from voting at the UN Security Council condemning Russia’s action against Ukraine.
‘We are thinking about how to keep India together on the way forward. We are considering what options we can come up with and discussions are ongoing, ”she said.
In addition to maintaining close ties with Russia, India has recently improved relations with the United States. India is heavily dependent on Russia for its defense. This is one of the factors that motivated India to maintain close ties with Russia.
Prior to the occupation of Ukraine, India had refused to suspend the AS-400 anti-aircraft defense deal with Russia despite strong US protests and sanctions threats.
