A particularly unscrupulous human smuggler from Moldova now has to stand trial.
The Csongrád-Csanád County Public Prosecutor’s Office brought charges against the man arrested last summer for human smuggling and negligently causing a traffic accident resulting in death. On August 10, 2023, the Moldovan picked up 19 illegal migrants on the Serbian-Hungarian border in his van near Ásotthalom. He was traveling with his cargo of people on Main Street 55 when he came across a police checkpoint. The defendant initially stopped, but then unexpectedly accelerated. The police began pursuing the vehicle.
The man fled at high speed until he lost control of the vehicle on a curve. The car skidded and crashed into a ditch. The defendant then tried to hide in a nearby forest but was later arrested. As a result of the serious traffic accident, one child of the border violators transported in the vehicle died at the scene of the accident, five illegal immigrants suffered serious injuries and thirteen minor injuries.
