Indie-Rock Singer Sufjan Stevens Recovers from Guillain-Barré Syndrome: A Rare Autoimmune Disorder

by time news

Indie-rock singer Sufjan Stevens has revealed that he is currently recovering from Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder that has left him unable to walk. Stevens made the announcement in a statement on his website, explaining that he had been hospitalized for several weeks due to the condition. Guillain-Barré syndrome is a disorder that attacks the nerves and can potentially lead to paralysis.

Stevens recounted experiencing symptoms that left him immobile one morning, prompting his brother to take him to the hospital. After undergoing a series of tests, including MRIs, scans, and spinal taps, he was diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder. Stevens received immunohemoglobin infusions for five days as treatment, which proved successful.

Although he is currently unable to walk, Stevens remains optimistic about his recovery. He shared that he is undergoing intensive physical and occupational therapy to regain strength and mobility in his body. The recovery process may take some time and require hard work, but the singer is determined to get better.

Representatives for Stevens declined to comment on whether he had suffered from any previous illnesses before his diagnosis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about two-thirds of people with Guillain-Barré syndrome had experienced diarrhea or a respiratory illness several weeks prior to developing symptoms.

Unfortunately, Stevens’ health condition has affected his ability to promote his upcoming album, “Javelin,” which is set to be released next month. Two songs from the album, “So You Are Tired” and “Will Anybody Ever Love Me?,” have already been released.

Sufjan Stevens has gained popularity in recent years, venturing into mainstream pop culture with his music. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 2018 for best original song for his song “Mystery of Love” in the film “Call Me by Your Name.” His song “Chicago” from his 2005 album, “Illinois,” has also appeared in various films and television shows.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare neurological disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks parts of the nervous system, according to experts. It can affect anyone but is more common in adults over the age of 50. Around 3,000 to 6,000 people develop the syndrome each year in the United States. The exact cause of Guillain-Barré syndrome is unknown, but it is believed to be triggered by a preceding infection or, in rare cases, a vaccination. The syndrome causes symptoms ranging from weakness to paralysis.

Mild cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome may only cause weakness starting at the feet and legs and gradually progressing up the body. However, severe cases can result in progressive muscle weakness and even paralysis, sometimes requiring intubation for breathing support. Prompt diagnosis is crucial as symptoms can worsen rapidly. While most people with Guillain-Barré syndrome fully recover, some may be left with residual paralysis. Rehabilitation is often required to regain strength, and the recovery process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few years.
