London: An Argentine court has ordered the trial of eight people accused of negligence in the death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. Eight people have been charged with manslaughter, including Leopold Luke, a neurosurgeon who treated Maradona before his death.

The court ordered a trial for the criminal homicide after the medical board found deficiencies and omissions in Maradona’s treatment. The medical board reported to Maradona that Maradona, who had been showing signs of pain for 12 hours, had not received adequate medical care and could have survived if he had been admitted to the hospital on time.

Under Argentine law, the offense is punishable by up to eight to 25 years in prison. Maradona, 60, died on November 25, 2020, of a heart attack. He was released from the hospital two weeks ago after undergoing brain surgery.
