Between May and August 2023, 300.98 degraded hectares were recorded within the Indigenous Lands (TIs) with the presence of isolated peoples, according to the latest Sirad-I Bulletinreleased this Thursday (11/30).

Already Terra Indígena West-Eu-Wau-Wau (RO), which is inhabited by at least five isolated groups and another four indigenous peoples, not even the overlap of the Pacaás Novos National Park (Parna), an integrally protected Conservation Unit, has prevented the action of the invaders.

In total, according to data from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) system, the TI has already lost 20,770 hectares of forest. In 2023 alone, Sirad-I monitoring has already detected 90.6 hectares of deforestation in the Indigenous Land.

Already Piripkura Indigenous Land (MT), where 168.4 hectares have already been deforested since January, the expansion of previously deforested areas indicates the intention to transform the territory into pasture.

The period was also marked by the opening of road extensions very close to Indigenous Lands, as in OF Arariboia (MA), and the increase in the incidence of heat sources, with emphasis on the TI Munduruku (PA).

2,266 hot spots were detected in 13 Indigenous Lands, a number 86.5% higher than that seen in the same period last year.

TI Munduruku concentrated the most critical cases of fires and had 346 hot spots detected, almost double the number in the same period in 2022.

In the Amazon, where natural fires are rare, the increase indicates the potential presence of invaders and raises awareness about the impact of climate change on Indigenous Lands with the presence of isolated peoples.
