Indonesia reported today (Saturday) that one person was killed and 41 were injured from burns following the eruption of the Samaru volcano in the island of Java this afternoon.

Videos shared by emergency officials documented the islanders running with huge clouds of smoke and ash rising to the sky and covering the nearby villages in the east of the island.

The deputy head of the district, Inda Masdar, informed at a press conference that one person died and 41 people suffered burns.

Authorities set up evacuation tents, the state Disaster Prevention Agency (BNPB) said, but the evacuation was delayed due to the thick smoke.

AirNav Indonesia, which controls Indonesia’s airspace, said in a statement that the eruption did not “cause a significant impact” on flights.

Semeru, the highest mountain on the island of Java, is among the nearly 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia. It erupted last January, causing no casualties.
