Jakarta: Last year, the country’s parliament approved the bill to transfer the Indonesian capital Jakarta to the island of Borneo. Following this, the Indonesian government has seriously embarked on the process of changing the capital. The new capital was also named Nusantara. But the decision to shift the capital has been strongly criticized by environmentalists. They have expressed fear that the move of the capital will lead to deforestation in the island of Borneo.

According to data from Indonesia’s National Planning and Development Agency, the total land area for the new capital is measured at about 256,143 hectares (about 2,561 square kilometers). In the first phase, there were reports that more than 10 lakh government employees would be transferred to Nusantara city. However, ministries and government agencies have said they are still working on finalizing the number of government employees who will be transferred.

Indonesia occupies most of Borneo, the third largest island in the world. Malaysia and Brunei occupy parts of the northern part of the island of Borne.

Why is Indonesia moving its capital? – The ever-increasing population in the capital, Jakarta, has been a constant problem for the Indonesian government. Also, due to climate change, Jakarta is facing severe impacts from various natural disasters. Due to the increase in population, traffic and air pollution are increasing in Jakarta. Due to this, it is said that Indonesia has come to the decision to change the capital.

The Indonesian government has decided to move the capital from Jakarta in 2019. It is noteworthy that this decision was postponed due to Corona.
