“This Gigafactory consolidates Morocco’s position as a future hub for electric mobility, thanks to the enlightened strategic vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI,” Mr. Jazouli stressed during a round table with the media on the occasion of the signing of an investment agreement worth 12.8 billion dirhams (MMDH) for the creation of a complete industrial ecosystem for the manufacturing of electric batteries in Kenitra.

The first phase of this ambitious project is based on a production of 20 GWh for an export capacity of 20 billion dirhams, which will allow the creation of 17,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs, including 2,300 with high qualifications,” the minister said.

“Ultimately, this capacity will reach 100 GWh for a total investment of 65 billion dirhams,” he added, noting that this is the first Gigafactory of electric batteries in the Middle East & Africa region.

As for the choice of Morocco by the Gotion High Tech group, Mr. Jazouli emphasized the stability enjoyed by the Kingdom, thanks to the vision of HM King Mohammed VI, the youth of its population, the quality of its infrastructure and the free trade agreements signed with several countries, which promotes access to a large market and constitutes an export base.

“Today we are reaping the fruits of the Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI concerning renewable energies,” he rejoiced, noting that “thanks to this Vision, green energy is available in Morocco at an ultra-competitive price.”

On this occasion, the Minister affirmed that the Investment Charter offers a clear framework for investors and the business climate which continues to improve.

Referring to the economic benefits of this project, particularly in terms of employment, value creation and foreign currency income, Mr. Jazouli indicated that the future Gigafactory will help preserve jobs in the automotive sector, especially with the new European Union regulations for 2035 for electric mobility.

For this first Gigafactory, the Moroccan State has decided to place its trust in the Sino-European player Gotion High-Tech, a world leader in the electric battery sector, one of whose reference shareholders is the German group Volkswagen, which has made major investments in Europe, the United States and Asia with nearly 12 Gigafactories launched in the last two years in order to meet the significant global demand in the electric mobility sector.

The agreement was signed during a ceremony chaired by the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, by the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Nadia Fettah, the Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, the Minister of National Land Use Planning, Urban Planning, Housing and Urban Policy, Fatim-Ezzahra El Mansouri, the Minister of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment and Skills, Younes Sekkouri, and the Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour.
