Ine: ‘When I was 31 years old I got anal cancer’ | Reader column

by time news

Anal cancer, how do you get that again? “Well, too long with my ass in the sun.” This friend-of-a-friend answer is funny if you don’t feel like serious conversation, but it’s important to be honest about it every now and then.

Anuskanker

So when I was 31 years old I got anal cancer. Heavy treatment followed and I am still alive. All’s well that ends well, you might think.

Unfortunately, the story does not end here. Radiation destroys a lot. I couldn’t have children. A primal sadness that almost cost me my life, a loss that I am confronted with every day. The consequences of the treatment have seriously disrupted my life in recent years.

The radiation treatments ‘scar’ the organ tissue in my lower abdomen. I have cramps every day. It’s doable, I can’t complain. But since it’s a progressive process, I don’t know where it ends.

Get your teens vaccinated

I still have a few unpleasant side effects, but my point is made. In addition to cervical cancer, you can also get other types of cancer from the HPV virus, which are therefore not screened for.

Mothers, fathers, get your teens vaccinated (it’s not the vaccine that makes you infertile, but the cancer itself). Did your parents not vaccinate you? Protect yourself, do it anyway.

So much for this important message.
