INER increased its medical staff by 71% during the pandemic.
The workforce went from 2,100 to 3,600 health workers.
In addition, during the last 10 years it has managed to maintain its prestige with the graduation of 747 highly specialized professionals and the admission of 908 residents.

The Covid-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerability of the Mexican health system. Most of the hospitals were not prepared nor did they have enough elements to face such a big problem. Therefore, the natural thing was to increase the number of workers. One of the most notorious starred the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases (INER) by exponentially increasing its medical staff.

To get an idea, between 2020 and 2021 hired 71 percent more staff to meet the demand for services due to the emergencyinformed its general director, Jorge Salas Hernández.

Achievements achieved during the last decade

In his work report Ten years of work: the transition towards modernization, the general director of INER said that before the pandemic the institute had 2,100 health workers. Instead, there are currently 3,600.

He explained that as the health emergency decreased, the normalization of services to attend asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, chronic obstructive disease (COPD), sleep disorders, allergic rhinitis and others.

He explained that first-time and subsequent consultations, care in respiratory emergencies, hospitalization, surgery, anesthetic and highly specialized procedures have increased. In addition to discharges for improvement, rehabilitation sessions, training and continuing education.

With the return to normality in terms of medical care, the days of hospitalization, hospital mortality, hospital readmission, occupation in intensive care and unplanned extubations have decreased.

He announced that, in 2022, the INER provided 68 thousand 967 consultations. While so far this year it has offered 7,561. “The challenge is to reach the more than 85,000 that were offered before 2020.”

Work in resident training

He mentioned that during the last 10 years, INER has managed to maintain its prestige with the graduation of 747 highly specialized professionals and the admission of 908 residents in pulmonology, critical medicine, quality clinical care, as well as nursing specialties, with terminal efficiency of 98.8 percent.

He stressed that even with the difficulties during 2020 and 2021, INER has maintained its staff of 100 top-level researchers.

He highlighted the authorization that the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) issued to INER as an institutional pharmacovigilance center. He also recognized the altruism of Banco de México with the donation in the last two years of 750 computers, 685 monitors and 78 telephones.

Salas Hernández also mentioned that INER’s YouTube channel has 46,936 subscribers, with views from various parts of Mexico, Central and South American countries, as well as the United States and Spain, among others.
