At the beginning of February, the world of football saw the birth of a striking proposal that would change the sport forever: the blue card. This new card would allow the referee to send off a player for only 10 minutes in case of protests. However, this rule was not well received by a large number of people. One of them was Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, who made it clear this Friday that the institution rejects completely the introduction of this element.
Infantino stressed that FIFA’s refusal to adopt blue cards is based on the firm intention to “protect the tradition of the game”. The owner expressed his position before the annual congress of the International Football Board Association (IFAB), scheduled for this Saturday in Glasgow, Scotland.
“No, there will not be any blue cards, at any level. It is a topic that does not exist for FIFA. There is no way“said the boss in a press conference upon his arrival in the Scottish city.
With a touch of humor, the FIFA president announced his position categorically: “Do you want a title? It would be: ‘Red card to blue card’. We are always open at IFAB (International Football Association Board) and FIFA to look for ideas or proposals, and each proposal and idea has to be treated with respect, of course. But once you look at it, We must also protect the game, the essence and tradition of the game“said the head of FIFA.
In this way, Infantino dismissed the rumors about the possible implementation of the blue card in football, originating from the suggestions of the IFAB, an organization that will debate its implementation at the congress this Saturday.
What is the blue card?
This implementation will be intended to expel footballers from the field for about 10 minutes and not permanently as is currently the case. It will not be aimed at serious infractions that do deserve a greater punishment: it will be for specific cases of tactical fouls, or protests for not agreeing with the referee’s decisions.
