Infectiologist Provides an Epidemiological Update on the Current Infection Situation in the Lienz District

The infectiologist from Ausservillgraten (Infectiology Tyrol) has provided crucial information about the current infection situation in the Lienz district. With Christmas being a crucial phase for infectious diseases, the specialist highlighted the changing spectrum of pathogens due to heavy travel, family gatherings, and more intensive leisure contacts during the holiday season. After Epiphany, the situation can be evaluated well until the semester break in February, making it a good time for an epidemiological update on the situation in East Tyrol and neighboring areas.

This year, powerful and cost-effective array and multiplex methods are available for the first time, enabling rapid and comprehensive clarification of viral and atypical pathogens. These methods allow for the testing of more than 30 germs at the same time from a swab, within a few hours, providing a comprehensive understanding of the infection situation. However, the costs of such a specialist medical examination are not covered by health insurance.

An evaluation of more than 200 swabs from symptomatic patients since December 1st revealed a colorful picture of the current infectious situation in East Tyrol. The most commonly detected pathogen in symptomatic patients is Haemophilus influenzae, followed by influenza, pneumococci, SARS-CoV2, enteroviruses, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and classic respiratory coronaviruses. With the number of corona cases decreasing since December and the number of influenza cases rising sharply since Christmas, it is important to take precautions and seek medical attention if symptoms arise.

Overall, the picture is of a “normal” winter season with a diverse picture characterized by interactions between several pathogens. The infectiologist emphasized the importance of targeted search for co-infections in severe or persistent cases, and the need for comprehensive protection when dealing with infectious patients.

In conclusion, a certain degree of caution and responsible behavior is recommended, but measures that go beyond the normal scope are not necessary. It is important for symptomatic individuals to seek medical attention, take sick leave if necessary, and practice good hand hygiene to reduce the risk of transmission to those around them. As the infection situation continues to evolve, it is crucial to stay informed and take appropriate precautions to protect oneself and others from infectious diseases.

This update provides valuable insights into the current infection situation in the Lienz district and emphasizes the importance of proactive measures to mitigate the spread of infectious diseases.]
