Editor: Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Epelboin.Infertility is an issue that affects many couples. According to‍ the world Health association, one ‍in six individuals of childbearing age will experience difficulty conceiving at some point. Can you explain what infertility is defined⁣ as?

Dr. ⁣Epelboin: Of course, and thank you for having me. infertility ‍is defined as the ⁤inability to achieve pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular sexual intercourse without using any contraceptive methods. This condition can stem ⁢from ⁢various issues ⁢related to the male ⁤or female reproductive system.

Editor: That’s a clear definition.‍ You mentioned that infertility ‌can result from both male and ⁤female reproductive issues. What are some of the main causes‍ of infertility⁣ that you see in your practise at Bichat ⁢Hospital?

Dr. Epelboin: In my experience, several factors contribute to infertility. For women, common causes⁣ include polycystic ovary‌ syndrome (PCOS),endometriosis,age-related⁢ decline in fertility, and uterine abnormalities. For men, issues often include‌ low sperm count or motility and hormonal imbalances. Lifestyle factors, ⁣such as‌ smoking or excessive alcohol consumption, can also⁤ play a ⁣significant role⁢ in ⁤both genders.

Editor: It’s captivating how lifestyle can affect fertility. With one in ten couples in France seeking help for ‌infertility issues, what advice would you give to couples ‍who are experiencing difficulties in conceiving?

Dr. Epelboin: ‍I ⁤always emphasize ⁢the importance of seeking ⁢guidance early on. Couples should be encouraged⁤ to‌ consult a medical professional if they⁤ have been ⁤trying ⁢to conceive for over a‍ year without success, especially‌ if the woman is over 35. Additionally, maintaining a⁣ healthy lifestyle—balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and avoiding harmful substances—can ‍significantly improve the chances of conception.

Editor: That’s valuable‍ advice. Can you tell ⁢us more about the role of medically assisted reproduction in addressing‌ infertility?

Dr. ‌Epelboin: Medically assisted reproduction encompasses ‍various techniques such as in vitro ‌fertilization (IVF), intrauterine insemination⁣ (IUI), and ⁢egg or sperm donation. These methods can ‍be crucial for ‍couples facing specific reproductive ⁤challenges. At our center, we assess ‌each case individually to create a tailored treatment plan that takes into account medical history and personal circumstances.

Editor: ⁣It sounds like a very personalized approach can lead to better outcomes. ⁢As⁢ an expert in reproductive health, what are some of the recent developments in⁤ infertility treatments ⁤that you find promising?

Dr. Epelboin: Recent advancements in genetic testing, such as preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), allow us to screen embryos for genetic disorders before implantation, wich can significantly improve the chances of a healthy pregnancy. Additionally, improvements in freezing ⁣technologies for eggs and sperm have expanded options for individuals looking to preserve their fertility.

Editor:‍ That indeed sounds promising for many couples. Lastly, what do⁣ you think are the implications of ⁢rising infertility rates on societal and healthcare systems?

Dr. epelboin: Rising infertility ⁤rates signify a⁣ growing ‌need for specialized reproductive healthcare services. This trend⁢ can also highlight the importance of public awareness regarding ⁤reproductive health and family planning. Societal support for couples experiencing infertility, along with increased access ⁣to treatments, will be essential in addressing this challenge effectively.
