An array of microphones will listen to the sounds of the road to detect the siren of security and rescue vehicles, locate their location and direction of movement using artificial intelligence software, and recommend to the vehicle how to clear the lane

Infineon Company (Infineon) and company Cerence The American company is developing a smart microphone for autonomous vehicles, which will listen to the sounds of the road to detect the sirens of security and rescue vehicles, locate their location and direction of movement using artificial intelligence software, and recommend to the vehicle how to clear the lane. The system will be based on an array of Infineon MEMS microphones (XENSIV IM67D130A), which are located at several points around the vehicle, and on voice recognition and analysis software from Serens. The system will allow autonomous vehicles to identify an advanced emergency vehicle, even when it is beyond the line of sight, and clear the path for it.

The system is intended for immediate use even in non-autonomous vehicles. Sarnes develops applications for modern vehicle systems, including control systems, computerized dashboards and more. One of the first applications of the system will be in non-autonomous cars: it will detect the approaching emergency vehicle and provide the driver with an indication of its location and direction of movement, including recommendations on how to clear the lane for it.

Infineon revealed the solution today (Thursday) during the OctoberTech exhibition in Silicon Valley. The company said that the microphone has a distortion level (Total Harmonic Distortion) of less than 0.5% and can therefore detect the security and rescue vehicles even in a very noisy environment. Infineon is one of the largest chip manufacturers in Europe. In the third quarter of 2022, its sales grew by about 10% and amounted to about 3.6 billion euros. The company published a sales forecast of 3.9 billion euros for the last quarter of the year, which will bring its sales volume to about 14.5 billion euros in 2022 – compared to sales of 13.5 billion euros in 2021.
