The chip manufacturer Infineon wants to cut more than a thousand jobs and relocate hundreds of jobs to cheaper locations. This also affects the Regensburg location.

Chip manufacturer Infineon wants to save by cutting or relocating a total of 2,800 jobs. The measures are part of a program announced months ago, and now figures for the measures have been announced. 1,400 jobs are to be lost. This includes a mid-three-digit number at the Regensburg site, which was already known.

The company also wants to relocate 1,400 jobs to cheaper locations. This affects all “high-wage countries” from North America to Asia, said Infineon CEO Jochen Hanebeck. First and foremost, they will go to cheaper countries in which Infineon is already active. Infineon has not yet revealed exactly where the remaining jobs will be lost or relocated. The manager explained that they want to inform employees first. He ruled out redundancies in Germany. The measures are “a difficult step” that management “did not take lightly.”

Regensburg, which is affected by the job cuts, remains “a central location,” stressed Hanebeck. It is being geared more towards innovation. This means it is “secured for many years to come.” Regarding the Dresden location, the Infineon boss said that jobs would continue to be created there.

Infineon is currently suffering – like much of the chip industry – from weak demand for its products. In the third quarter of its fiscal year, which just ended, the company made a profit of 403 million euros. Although this is not even half as much as a year ago, it is still far from the loss zone.
