Inflation in Spain has led to a significant increase in the purchase of private label products, as they are more affordable for consumers. For the first time in history, Spain surpasses countries such as the United Kingdom and Germany in own-brand sales, which have traditionally led in this area. According to the latest data on private label sales between 2022 and 2023, in Spain they represent 44.4% of total purchasing spending, while in the United Kingdom it is 43.6%, in Germany 41% and in France a 33%. Only smaller markets, such as the Netherlands or Switzerland, are ahead of Spain in this trend.

Compared to the previous year, the purchase of private label products in Spain has increased by 2%. Javier Campo, president of the Association of Manufacturers and Distributors, recently commented that this change in consumer behavior has been “significant”, but will not necessarily follow the same trend in the long term, since “Spain already has the highest percentage of distribution brand in Europe”.

White label purchasing has become a key strategy for consumers as food prices rise more than 10%. This has resulted in an increase in the average purchase ticket of around 6%. In particular, non-alcoholic beverages are the private label products that have experienced the greatest growth. Despite manufacturers’ concerns, the ground gained by private labels could be difficult to recover, even if prices moderate in the future.
