Inflation: Faced with soaring prices, millions of Britons would skip meals

by time news

Habits have already changed. According to a poll published on Thursday, millions of Britons are skipping meals because of soaring costs in the UK, including those for food which pushed inflation above 10% last month in the country .

According to the results of a survey of nearly 3,000 people by “Which? half of British households are reducing the number of their meals. A similar proportion say they find it difficult to eat healthily compared to before the crisis, and opt for ready-made meals to reduce their use of gas or electricity.

80% of respondents say they are experiencing financial difficulties. Many are now depriving themselves of all delicacies to buy only the essentials.

An energy risk

The British consumer association had already warned on Wednesday that millions of British households also risked finding themselves in energy poverty and therefore not being able to heat themselves adequately this winter, after the new finance minister considerably shortened the duration of a cap on energy bills.

Jeremy Hunt canceled a large part of the budgetary measures announced at the end of September by his predecessor Kwasi Kwarteng, mixing massive support for energy expenditure for households and businesses with all-out tax cuts. Financed by debt in full surge of inflation and unquantified, they had unleashed a storm on the markets.

Jeremy Hunt cut household energy support to six months from two years ago, as gas prices soared year on year, particularly since Russia invaded Ukraine. At 10.1% over one year in September, British inflation is the highest of the G7 countries and at a peak for forty years.
