Inflation in Russia peaks since 2015

Inflation in Russia from December 21 to December 27 slowed down to 0.26%, according to Rosstat data. Since the beginning of the year, prices have risen by 8.26%, the highest since 2015. According to preliminary estimates of the service, the final inflation for the year will amount to 8.39%.

Of foodstuffs, the prices rose the most:

  • buckwheat – by 0.6%;
  • sausages, chicken eggs, butter and flour – by 0.5%;
  • pork, black tea, sugar and rice – by 0.4%;
  • pasta – by 0.3%;
  • beef, sausages, margarine, milk – by 0.2%.

Prices for fruits and vegetables increased on average by 1.2%. In particular, prices went up: white cabbage (by 3.2%), tomatoes (by 2.6%), cucumbers (by 2.5%), carrots (by 1.4%), potatoes (by 1%), onions onions (by 0.7%) and apples (by 0.2%).

Among non-food products, the most significant growth was observed in toothpastes (0.6%), matches (0.5%), toothbrushes and electric vacuum cleaners (by 0.3%). Gasoline prices increased by 0.1%, diesel prices – by 0.2%.

The growth of wages in Russia in real terms slowed down from 2% in September to 0.6% in October. The central bank expects inflation in the country to slightly exceed 8% by the end of 2021. The government believes that inflation is mainly imported, and in part it is “a price to pay for the openness of the economy.” President Vladimir Putin has said that it is necessary to return to the inflation target of 4%. From January, Rosstat will calculate weekly inflation in a new way.
