Citizens’ Money Reduction Proposed in Germany
The Federal Democratic Party (FDP) parliamentary group leader, Christian Dürr, has proposed a reduction in the monthly payments of “Bürgergeld” (citizens’ money) by 14 to 20 euros. This measure, according to Dürr, is a response to the recent decline in inflation.
Rationale for Reduction
Dürr argues that the current benefit amount of 14 to 20 euros per month is excessive, considering the current inflation rate. He believes this adjustment would relieve financial burden on taxpayers and incentivize recipients to seek employment.
Impact of Inflation on Benefits
Citizens’ money was increased by 12% at the beginning of 2024. Since then, recipients have seen an additional 61 euros per month. The program is currently scheduled for a potential reduction in 2025.
Government Response and Considerations
The German government cannot arbitrarily reduce citizens’ benefits. The aim is to ensure a minimum subsistence level for those who cannot afford basic necessities from their income alone.
