Inflation is starting to weigh on VSEs and SMEs

More and more small business owners have cash flow problems and anticipate a drop in their activity.

Orange alert. After a particularly dynamic year 2021 due to the recovery of activity following the Covid-19 crisis, VSEs and SMEs are expecting a slowdown in their activity over the whole of 2022. According to the latest survey half-year economic survey conducted in May-June by Bpifrance, the number of small and medium-sized enterprises anticipating a rebound in their activity – compared to those anticipating a downturn – fell by 11 points in six months, to now reach 25%.

Due to geopolitical uncertainties linked to the war in Ukraine and the return of sustained high inflation, the increase in their turnover should be limited to 4.9% over the year, versus 7% in 2021. “There is therefore no contraction yet”, wants to reassure Baptiste Thornary, chief economist at Bpifrance.
