It seeks to place itself on the side of the consumers. Michel-Edouard Leclerc, president of the strategic committee of the Leclerc centers, expressed this Wednesday his incomprehension with regard to the level of inflation.

Asked about France inter, he highlights a paradox. “We pay very high prices for food at a price that does not necessarily go to farms. »

He also considers that certain arguments serve as a pretext for raising prices. He thus draws a parallel between the various increases caused by the war in Ukraine and those of products whose revaluation seems rather disconnected from this conflict. “Manufacturers have hidden a lot behind the war in Ukraine, the scarcity of certain products, but hey, things are starting to do well when we talk about coffee and cocoa. It’s not Ukraine. »

“Laws let pass” these price increases

It also calls into question the lack of transparency of certain manufacturers. “We don’t necessarily have an explanation to give, the manufacturers are not transparent and therefore there are tensions in the stores. In the specific case of pasta, Michel-Edouard Lerclerc expresses his incomprehension. “40%, I never understood, I understood when I was told you will only get pasta if you accept a 35% increase last July, I realized it was take it or leave it. »

The leader also challenges political power with “laws that let this inflation pass”. The Descrozaille law, passed in March, will for example limit the amount of promotions on hygiene products and laundry. Distributors will not be able to compensate by organizing more promotions since the new legislation also limits the quantity of products that can be sold on promotion.

However, Leclerc sees relatively positive news. Trade negotiations are underway to limit the increases. If “we will never go back to before” he expects a slowdown with “3% to 4%” this fall.
