Inflation: Michel-Edouard Leclerc warns that toys will be “more expensive” this Christmas

Christmas is going to cost more because of inflation. But the goal is to limit the increase for consumers. This is the guideline set by Michel-Edouard Leclerc, interviewed on BFMTV on Sunday evening.

“It will cost more to offer toys to his children”, warns the boss of the distribution sign. Among the many factors of the rise in prices, he highlights in particular the rise in transport costs, the French industry in the field being far from satisfying national demand.

But he assures that “we are not obliged to pass on everything”. He explains that he is going to cut back on certain margins to preserve part of the purchasing power of his customers and not to lose them afterwards. “We are going to offset a certain number of increases on chocolates, confectionery, because we don’t want to lose our customers in January,” he said.

“Everyone is going to party at Christmas. Everyone will yell that it’s expensive. And it will be expensive. But it is from January that I anticipate a real recession,” he explained. His reasoning about consumer practices is that “the big brands are leveling off, they have become too expensive, private labels are exploding, and now there are a lot of entry-level brands”. According to him, “there is a kind of impoverishment of the mode of consumption. It is a sign that we are entering a crisis. »
