Influenza Outbreak Continues to Increase in Thailand

The Public Health Emergency Epidemiology and Response Group has reported an alarming increase in influenza cases in Thailand. According to the report, from January 1 to December 26, 2023, a total of 467,899 cases of influenza have been recorded, with an illness rate of 707.10 per 100,000 people. The outbreak has also resulted in 13 deaths, with more female patients than males. The disease has shown a higher prevalence in the 10-14 year age group, followed by the 0-4 and 7-9 year age groups.

Dr. Thaweechai Wisanuyothin, Director of the Disease Prevention and Control Office 9, Nakhon Ratchasima, expressed his concern over the situation. The outbreak has hit the northeastern region particularly hard, with Nakhon Ratchasima Province reporting more than 6,000 sick people in the past 8 weeks.

The cold weather has been attributed to the spread of the virus, as the influence of high pressure and cold air masses from China have created ideal conditions for the virus to linger and spread. The virus has proven to be most dangerous to the 60 and over age group, as well as young children, due to their decreased immunity and higher susceptibility to infection.

As a result of the outbreak, people are advised to take extra precautions to protect their health, especially those in high-risk groups. It is recommended to maintain personal hygiene, keep the body warm, get vaccinated against influenza, and avoid large crowds. In case of any respiratory symptoms, wearing a mask, frequent hand washing with water and soap, and the use of alcohol gel are suggested.

The symptoms of influenza include acute high fever, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, sore throat, red eyes, and chills, along with headaches, muscle aches, and fatigue. While most patients recover on their own, it is important for those in high-risk groups to seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.

The Department of Disease Control hotline (1422) is available for further information and assistance.

The influenza outbreak has continued to rise, and it is crucial for the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the disease.]
