NEW DELHI: The deadline for commenting on the amendment to the Information Technology Act, which would give the central government the power to ascertain the veracity of news published on social media, has been extended.

There are more and more fake news on social media about Central Government schemes and the Central Government.

In order to prevent this, it has been decided to hand over the responsibility of ascertaining the truth of the news published on social media to PIP, a press information agency operating under the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

For this, amendments are to be made in the provisions of the Information Technology Act.

Many organizations including Newspaper Association of India, Journal Editors’ Association and Journalists’ Association have protested against this move by the central government.

These organizations have strongly condemned this as an act of stifling and intimidating the media.

Time was given till January 25 to comment on the amendment. In this case, the central government has issued a notification extending this till February 20.
