Infrastructure for disabled people has appeared on the beaches of Cyprus

by time news

Riding a wheelchair on the beach is not an easy task, so people with limited mobility are either forced to ask for help or are completely deprived of rest on the seashore. Within the framework of the ERMIS II project, special equipment and infrastructure have appeared on some beaches in Cyprus and Greece, thanks to which vacationers with disabilities can independently and easily enjoy the sea.

Moving independently on the sand on the beach is an almost impossible task for a wheelchair user. But special paths will expand the possibilities of sea recreation in Greece and Cyprus for those people whose mobility is limited. Moreover, at the very water for the disabled, rail tracks will be installed, along which they can independently enter the sea on a chair, unfasten and swim. A special solar-powered drive will help you to enter and get out of the water. Photo: gettyimages

Firstly, a system of railings and ramps to the water were installed on the beaches, along which you can easily ride a chair. Secondly, we delivered 24 strollers each, which are designed specifically for driving on sand and in other tourist areas. Thirdly, a kind of Seatrac rail tracks appeared, along which a stainless steel chair travels from the beach to the water itself, allowing people with disabilities to swim in the sea on their own. How it works: a person drives up to the Seatrac, changes from his wheelchair to this one, uses a special remote control to activate it and drives it into the water. The path goes into the sea about two meters from the shore, so that the vacationer finds himself in the water up to his waist or neck. Having bought a swim, the person returns to the chair, if he sailed away from it, presses the desired button on the remote control and goes back to land.

This miracle of technology works on solar batteries – it is safer and more environmentally friendly, Ignatius Fotiu, head of TOBEA, which manufactures Seatrac, told Euronews. You can find a beach with such equipment in a special mobile application. According to the European Commission, the total funding for ERMIS II is almost 600 thousand euros. Of these, 497,129 euros came from the EU Regional Development Fund.

And how are we?

In Crimea, according to the regional Ministry of Tourism, conditions for disabled people have been created on 49 beaches. However, the degree of comfort varies considerably. There are beaches with only a ramp and footpaths, as, for example, in the village of Peschaniy, Bakhchisarai district. According to the chairman of the Crimean organization of the All-Russian Society of Disabled People, Sergei Poddubny, if we talk about full compliance with the standards for recreation for disabled people, now there are a maximum of a dozen such beaches in Crimea. Among those meeting all the requirements are the beach of the Evolution Sports Center and two beaches of the Crimean Republican Center for Vocational Rehabilitation of Disabled People in Yevpatoria, as well as one beach in the city of Saki, famous for sanatoriums that specialize in treating people with musculoskeletal disorders.

As the “RG” was told in the Ministry of Resorts, Tourism and the Olympic Heritage of the Kuban, in total in the region on the Azov-Black Sea coast 64 beaches are equipped with special elements for people with disabilities. Moreover, they are convenient not only for wheelchair users, but also for elderly guests. The beaches are convenient for different categories of disabled people, they are equipped with ramps, duplicate staircases at the entrance, wooden flooring, changing cabins and showers, equipped with support handrails, folding seats. Most of the beaches aimed at people with limited mobility are located in Sochi. The main Kuban resort has 39 such places in all four districts: in Adlersky – 15, in Lazarevsky – ten, in Central and Khostinsky – seven each.
