The National Institute for Agricultural Research (INIAP), together with cocoa producers from Esmeraldas, has announced the commercial release of new clones of fine and aromatic cocoa, the result of more than two decades of scientific research. These advances promise to transform the production and economy of one of the most important agricultural sectors in Ecuador.

The new materials developed by INIAP have been praised by local farmers for their high yield potential and quality. At an event held with the support of GIZ Ecuador, IICA Ecuador, Agrocalidad Ecuador and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, producers from the Association of Cocoa Producers (APROCA) shared their testimonies on how these clones are significantly improving their harvests and quality of life.

Wilfrido Sosa, member of APROCA, highlighted the importance of this innovation for the sector, stressing that the new clones are not only meeting, but exceeding farmers’ expectations.

This advance represents a milestone for the Ecuadorian cocoa sector, strengthening INIAP’s commitment to agricultural research and development in the country. The presentation of these new clones not only highlights the potential of research for agriculture, but also demonstrates the positive impact on the agricultural community of Esmeraldas.
