In the last game before the start of the Olympic football tournament, the DFB team celebrated a clear victory. However, there are concerns about one of their key players.
This could significantly dampen the anticipation of the Olympics: DFB midfielder Lena Oberdorf had to be substituted due to injury in the women’s national team’s last game before the start of the Olympic football tournament. In the 71st minute of the German team’s 4-0 victory against Austria in the European Championship qualifiers, Oberdorf fell to the ground after a tackle and held her right knee with a face contorted in pain.
After a few minutes of treatment on the field, the new Bayern signing was unable to continue. Supported by his team, Oberdorf hopped off the field and was unable to even put his right foot down. Sjöke Nüsken came on for her.
It is still unclear how serious Oberdorf’s injury actually is. After the match, national coach Horst Hrubesch simply said on the ARD microphone that the examinations would have to be awaited. Regarding a possible absence from the Olympic tournament, Hrubesch said: “That would hurt us a lot, she is an important factor” and continued: “I hope it is not that bad, we will wait and see.”
DFB defender Kathrin Hendrich said: “She screamed in pain. She said it was a crack, but of course that doesn’t always mean something.” Guilia Gwinn, who led the team onto the field as captain in the absence of the injured Alexandra Popp, added: “At the moment the negative impact outweighs everything else. It’s a terrible wait for the diagnosis.” There is no positive news, especially when it comes to knee injuries, said Gewinn, who has had bitter experiences with cruciate ligament tears herself: “We will keep our fingers crossed and send all our strength to her. It would be a bitter loss for us on and off the field.”
