FEED – Whether they like it or not, the majority of French people are concerned. Directly on their plate, indirectly through livestock, they will eat insects. For two years, the marketing authorizations given by the European Commission follow one another.

France-Evening decided to take a closer look at the subject. Here is a selection of excerpts from the interview granted to us by entomologist Christophe Bressac, researcher at the Institute for Research on Insect Biology.

How to disentangle the true from the false in terms of entomophagy (a scholarly name for the consumption of insects)? The press is often content with glowing articles, extolling only the merits of this nascent industry, while social networks are buzzing with alarmist claims.

One thing is certain: there is a lobby of insect producers, active in Brussels.

And the European Commission is giving more and more marketing authorizations. Mealworms, house crickets, migratory locusts, or even, recentlylesser mealworm, granted to the sole company Ynsect.

Among the biggest players in the sector, the French firm just announced one of the biggest fundraisers of the year, 160 million euros, in a gloomy economic context. But this round table is accompanied by a “restructuring plan”: 74 people will be made redundant.

Eldorado or economic and ecological mirage? The company has decided to refocus its activity on food, for pets… and for humans.
