Sergeant Maxim Molchanov, a soldier in the IDF, tragically lost his life yesterday in a stampede attack at the Maccabim checkpoint near Modi’in-Maccabim-Reot. This attack also left five others injured, one of whom is in critical condition. The incident occurred when a Palestinian terrorist, Daoud Abd-Razak Faiz, deliberately drove his truck into Molchanov and the others present at the checkpoint.
This heartbreaking news comes just ten months after Sergeant Molchanov was interviewed by IDF Radio, where he shared his inspiring story of donating bone marrow to save the life of a 12-year-old boy. The soldier recalled receiving a call from a nurse who explained the procedure and asked if he would be willing to donate. Despite his initial concerns about his own physical stature and his responsibilities as a soldier, Molchanov ultimately decided to go ahead with the donation. His selfless act had a profound impact on the young boy and his family, demonstrating Molchanov’s unwavering commitment to making a difference in the world.
Prior to this heroic act, Molchanov had already shown immense determination in his life’s journey. Originally from Ukraine, he immigrated to Israel six years ago with the goal of studying, joining the army, and continuing his education at university. His older brother had already paved the way, immigrating to Israel in 2010 and becoming a successful graduate of the army. Molchanov credited his brother with helping him adapt to life in Israel, providing guidance and support along the way.
However, even as Molchanov pursued his dreams in Israel, his family remained in Ukraine. He expressed the difficulties they faced, with bombings and soldiers causing fear and hardship. Despite being physically distant, Molchanov maintained contact with them whenever possible, offering love and support from afar.
Throughout his military service, Molchanov faced challenges and obstacles. As a lone soldier with a different language background, he initially wanted to be part of a specific combat unit but was redirected towards the fire unit. Nevertheless, this did not deter his dedication to his duties and love for his country. He served with honor and courage, always striving to protect his fellow citizens.
The tragic loss of Sergeant Maxim Molchanov has deeply affected the IDF and the country as a whole. Defense Minister Yoav Galant, along with other high-ranking officials, held a situation assessment in response to the attack. Galant emphasized that Israel will not tolerate acts of terrorism and that those responsible will face justice swiftly and decisively.
