In response to the Taliban’s decision to install 62,000 security cameras in Kabul and other areas, Matt Mahmoudi, Researcher and Amnesty International Advisor on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, said:

“The adoption of a mass surveillance architecture of these characteristics in the name of ‘national security’ paves the way for the Taliban to continue with its policies that violate the fundamental rights of the population of Afghanistan, especially those of women in the spaces public.”

“If installed, this surveillance architecture would also erode the rights to privacy and freedom of assembly and expression, which have come under unprecedented attack since the Taliban came to power, causing the rule of law to erode.”

Amnesty International has previously documented that the Israeli authorities use facial recognition technology to support their continued dominance and oppression of the Palestinian population in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Amnesty International has also previously documented the use of thousands of facial recognition-capable CCTV cameras in New York City, many of which were used in communities of color and increased racially discriminatory policing.

Since taking over the country, the Taliban have decimated the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan. The scale and severity of the Taliban’s human rights violations against women and girls are also increasing by the month.
