In recent reports, it has been revealed that while special forces have been formed and measures have been taken to apprehend the criminals involved in these scams, a majority of them operate from foreign countries or other states.
Within the last three months alone, nearly 40 people in Chennai have lodged complaints with the Cyber Wing of the police. Typically, individuals who become victims of honey-drop scams refrain from reporting their ordeal out of fear of being misrepresented. However, it is essential to remember that nobody should be cheated in such a manner. Therefore, those affected are urged to immediately visit the Cybercrime Police’s website at www.cybercrime.gov.in and register their complaints by contacting the toll-free number 1930.
As a general precaution, it is advised not to answer video calls from unknown numbers through WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. Scammers have been known to make such video calls, recording them alongside a topless photo of a woman, and then threatening the recipient by threatening to share the video with their contacts.
The police emphasize that the scammers will progressively demand money and continue to threaten even after being paid off. Moreover, in some cases, multiple individuals will partake in the threats, communicating through mobile phones. Unfortunately, some victims only approach the cyber police after paying the initial amount and subsequently receiving further threats. Consequently, individuals who find themselves caught in such scams are advised not to panic but rather report the incident immediately.
