Insurance supports the implementation of a comprehensive European strategy on mental health

Insurers have been in favor of support the strategy of the European Commission to adopt a comprehensive approach to mental health.

Thus, Insurance Europe has responded to a formal request from the European Commission stating that there is scope in Europe to raise awareness about mental health in order to encourage citizens to seek appropriate, timely and adequate treatment.

The European Commission, in the opinion of Insurante Europe, could play a role in fostering action at the national level that would help address mental health challenges and improve health care outcomes, in particular:

• Promoting personalization of care;
• Improving the relationship between mental health professionals and physicians, throughout the patient treatment process;
• Increasing the quality of information provided to relatives of patients with mental health problems;
• Taking further action to fight stigma around mental health issues; in fact, the taboos surrounding mental health conditions compromise people’s inclination to seek help in the crucial early stages of a mental health problem.
