Vienna. The Migration and Integration Report prepared by the Austrian Statistical Institute for 2024 was announced on Monday. The report shows how migration has developed in Austria in recent years.

According to the news from “Heute”, Vienna is at the top of the list of destinations for refugees. The latest data shows that there are around 720,000 people in the Austrian capital without Austrian citizenship. The main reason is the social assistance distributed by the Vienna administration. Integration Minister Susanne Raab (ÖVP) presenting the report “So far Vienna has paid much more to beneficiaries of subsidiary protection than other federal states, which is a pulling factor” he said. People entitled to temporary protection receive 730 euros more voluntarily from the city than anywhere else.

The highest rate is in Vienna

When comparing states, the state with the highest foreign-born population is Vienna (40.2 percent), followed by Vorarlberg (23.2 percent), Salzburg (21.7 percent) and Tirol (20.9 percent) after that. The lowest rates are seen in Burgenland (13.5 percent), Lower Austria (14.7 percent) and Kärnten (15.0 percent).

The percentage of immigrants varies among the 23 districts in Vienna. Most foreign-born people tend to go to Central Vienna, with the exception of Neubau and Josefstadt. However, in addition to the trendy areas of simmering, Favoriten and Hernals, people in this group are also located in areas outside the city.

In eastern Vienna alone – in Liesing and Hietzing – it seems that 20 to 30 percent of the population was born abroad. Although these two areas are therefore a real exception, according to Statistics Austria, “30 to 40 percent” of immigrants live in other surrounding areas such as Floridsdorf, Donaustadt, Penzing and Döbling.
