Intel CEO: microchip shortage could drag on until 2023

by time news

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said that the situation with a shortage of microchips in the world could persist until 2023.

According to the head of Intel, the situation on the microchip market may begin to improve by the end of this year, but the deficit will remain for another year or two. “We have a long way to go. It takes a long time to build up production capacity, ”said Mr Gelsinger during the presentation of the company’s second quarter financial results.

The chip shortage has already led to a decline in the production of cars around the world, as well as electronics and home appliances. And if earlier the deficit concerned primarily the most advanced models of microprocessors used in cars or PCs, now we are talking about a shortage of simple chips for various gadgets. Many companies have already reported production cuts and price increases, and have postponed the launch of new smartphone models.

Mr. Gelsinger took over as CEO of Intel in February this year, and in March the company presented its strategic development plan, the main points of which were the construction of microchip factories and increased funding for the company’s research and development work.
